Andrew Washkowitz
Graduate Student
I was born and raised in Manhattan and went to high school about 40 blocks south of Columbia. After high school, I earned my undergraduate degree at Harvard College in biology. As an undergrad, I worked in Professor Steve Lory's lab where I worked on the regulation of the Type-III secretion system in pathogenic bacteria.
After I graduated, I decided that while I thought I wanted to do research, I should know what full time work in the lab is like, so I became a technician in Doug Melton's lab at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. There, I worked on generating reporter lines of human embryonic stem cells as part of a larger high throughput screen system that was being developed. I also made a variety of human ES and mouse ES lines that had various useful genetic constructs to speed study in the lab. My primary interests lie in developmental biology, though it seems like there are many different areas in biology that would help in studying development from different angles.

In my free time, I enjoy running and avidly follow New York sports. I also enjoy cooking and basket-weaving and try to watch as much reality TV as possible.
