 | Although I grew up in Boston, I graduated from the University of Chicago, where I majored in Biology and minored in Philosophy. During my time at Chicago, I attached myself to a lab investigating plant-pathogen interactions and their genetic basis, and took up a project exploring this topic using Pseudomonas syringae and lettuce. With these two organisms, I explored the reactions between various bacterial effector protein/lettuce subspecies combinations to learn more about the genetic basis of disease resistance in this system. Even though this work matured into an honors thesis, the time spent with the lab was far too short, and before I knew it I graduated.
After college, I moved back to Boston, where I joined the Center for Human Genetics at Boston University. There, I tested people for genetic diseases, in the hope that I could explore the application of the science done outside of a pure research setting. After almost two years and countless samples later, I decided it was time to continue my education at the graduate level; fortunately Columbia has provided such an opportunity. I'm confident that I can join a lab that allows me to add more depth to my interests in genetics and biology while allowing me to grow and explore.
Outside of the lab, I enjoy exploring the city (I'm always on the lookout for new places to have fun here), and experimenting with various styles of cooking. I'm a very big DIY-er, so I have fun with virtually anything that lets me start from scratch, such as building my own computers or growing my own plants. My musical tastes range from classical music to power metal, I prefer comedies and science fiction when it comes to films, and I love to travel when I get the chance. |
