Soviet Propaganda Art - The broadest range of Soviet political posters ever shown in this country - many never before been seen outside the former Soviet Union ( will be on view at Columbia University Feb.6-March 30. The exhibition, Building the Collective: Soviet Graphic Design, 1917-1937; Selections from the Collection of Merrill C. Berman, examines the ideological and visual strategies that helped create a vision of Communism as a collective technological society committed to rule in the name of the working class. Above left, a 1924 poster by Alekandr Samokhvalov, Long Live the Komsomol, celebrates the rise of a new generation of Soviet youth. On right, a poster by the Stenberg brothers from the late 1920s promotes workers' subscriptions to the literary journal Novyi Mir (New World). Building the Collective can be seen at the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery on Columbia's New York City campus at Broadway and 116th Street. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 P.M.
