And What a Homecoming It Was: Columbia Defeats Yale 21-10

Hooray for the victory on Homecoming Day

By Amy Callahan

A bit of the 1947 magic must have rubbed off on the 1997 Lions, as Columbia rolled to a 21-10 defeat of Yale on Homecoming Day last Saturday.

While in the stands sat some of the members of the 1947 team—which had upset Army's 32-game winning streak—down on the field, the Lions collected the exact number of points Columbia scored in the game against Army 50 years ago.

Quarterback Bobby Thomason, a 6'2" College senior from Mar Vista, Calif., completed 11 of 31 passes for 147 yards and scrambled for 64 yards. Thomason also threw a touchdown pass to Armand Dawkins, 6'2" from Compton, Calif., and carried one touchdown into the endzone himself.

Chris Tillotson, a 5' 10" junior from Royal Oak, Mich., continued to show his talent on defense when he grabbed his sixth interception of the season and ran 34 yards for a touchdown.

Cheering for both sides was Yale and Columbia alumnus Governor George Pataki (Law '71). At left is College Dean Austin E. Quigley.

Coach Ray Tellier told The New York Times: "Our offense put on the Superman suits. That was by far the best we've played."

  The Lions are now 2-4.

The junior varsity football team defeated Fordham on Monday 42-14, for a 4-0 record.

The Homecoming festivities included the dedication of the Aldo T. "Buff" Donelli Football Locker Room in Chrystie Field House.

In other athletic events that day, women's soccer lost to Yale 3-1; men's soccer lost to Yale 3-2, and field hockey came off a 3-2 victory over Fairfield last week only to fall to Yale 6-0.
